Living on Vancouver Island, we’re very familiar with power outages. Storms roll in off the ocean, move up and down the mountains, and take out power lines, plunging whole neighbourhoods into darkness. And almost without thinking, we light candles, maybe start a fire, and settle in with the people we love — in the room or on the phone. Those nights go better when we’re not alone.
Sunday, people of all ages are telling the Christmas story — the story of how God entered our stormy lives. The telling will be fun, with familiar characters acted out before us. But it will also remind us of something deeper: joy comes as we realize we can face any storm because God is with us.
I invite you to read this week’s text here and join us—online or in person—as we seek the peace that grows from God’s deep, hidden work.

A couple of years ago, we had to take down a big poplar tree beside our house. The arborist told us it still had plenty of life left in it—but that was the problem. Its roots would keep spreading under the foundation, drinking up the moisture, drying out the soil, and eventually cracking the cement. And once it got thirsty enough, it would start sending up shoots anywhere it could find more water.
That thirsty poplar wasn’t good for our home. But it’s become a vivid picture for me of another tree—one whose roots run through the whole story of humanity. Paul calls it “the Root of Jesse.” This tree sends up shoots too, not to damage but to heal; not to steal water but to bring peace and reconciliation to all peoples.
